In my work I often try to emphasise the pattern of things.
"A pattern is a depiction of an object's quintessential nature." writes Soetsu Yanagi in his book The Beauty of Everyday Things. "... it is what remains ... after all that is unnecessary has been removed."
WORK IN PROGRESS
In relief print an image is drawn or painted on to a block. The artist then cuts away everything not part of the image, also thought of as negative shapes. At the end only the areas making up the image remain, also thought of as positive shapes. This carved block gets inked-up in order to transfer the image on to paper.

During the carving process the attention is focused a lot on the negative shapes and I noticed a change in my perception after working on Winterwald. When I looked at trees, I saw the negative rather than the positive shapes. The below paper cut-outs are an illustration of this changed perception.
